Swan Hill was named when the explorer, Major Thomas Mitchell, set up camp by the Murray, and had his sleep continually interrupted by the calls of the black swans on the river. His glowing reports of the area led to the establishment of the Murray Downs and Tyntyndyer properties in the mid 1800's. The Tyntyndyer homestead is now open as a fascinating living history museum.

Today, Swan Hill is a thriving, modern city. Swan Hill and its irrigated hinterland are home to 16,000 people. An economic catchment stretching along the Murray Valley into the Mallee in Victoria and the Western Riverina in New South Wales, is also serviced by the city. Though still focused on primary production and supplying the needs of people and businesses in the area, Swan Hill has broadened its activities in commerce, manufacturing and tourism. The city today combines the relaxed lifestyle and community spirit of traditional rural life, with the facilities and conveniences of a much larger urban centre.

Her daily hour long cruises take you along the many bends of the Marraboor and Murray rivers, recalling her own years of service as a trading boat. A wonderful time to soak up the Pioneer Settlement is at dusk when a spectacular light show illuminates the village for the 'Sound and Light Tour' - a 45 minute journey in which visitors are transported past all the
